Star Wars Battlefront 3 reportedly in development as EA brings Respawn and DICE together

EA has confirmed that the studios will collaborate on an unnamed project, with reporting identifying it as a new Battlefront game.

Star Wars Battlefront could finally be heading towards another major instalment.

According to Variety, multiple sources have identified a collaboration between Respawn Entertainment and DICE as Star Wars Battlefront 3. EA has confirmed that the studios are joining forces, although the publisher has not publicly named their project.

That distinction matters: there is credible reporting behind the Battlefront connection, but an official announcement of the game itself is still awaited.

What has EA confirmed?

In a memo outlining the company’s direction, EA executives Cam Weber and David Tinson said Respawn and DICE would collaborate on a future project alongside the publisher’s continuing Battlefield plans.

The announcement placed the partnership within EA’s ambitions for its shooter portfolio. It did not specify the game’s title, release window or platforms.

There is consequently no basis yet for promising a particular launch year, console line-up or set of features.

Why the partnership is interesting

DICE developed the two modern Battlefront entries, while Respawn’s portfolio includes Titanfall, Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi games. The potential collaboration would bring together teams with experience in both large-scale multiplayer shooters and Star Wars adventures.

On paper, that is an appealing combination.

DICE’s experience could help establish the scale and atmosphere players associate with Battlefront. Respawn could bring another perspective on movement, combat and encounter design.

However, those possibilities are GameOrbit’s assessment of the partnership, rather than announced development responsibilities. Neither studio’s precise role has been publicly detailed.

A long-awaited opportunity for Battlefront

The previous modern entry, Star Wars Battlefront II, launched in 2017. Its substantial post-launch content programme concluded in 2020, following years of additions and changes.

EA’s own retrospective highlighted 25 free content updates, with additions across the game’s locations, characters and modes.

That history gives a potential successor a useful foundation. There is an established vision of Battlefront that players recognise: infantry battles, iconic heroes, vehicles and the spectacle of fighting inside the Star Wars universe.

A new instalment would need to build on that appeal while offering a convincing reason to move beyond its predecessor.

What would a new game need to deliver?

From GameOrbit’s perspective, a strong Battlefront return should prioritise satisfying battles and a clear progression system from the outset.

The moment-to-moment experience matters as much as the spectacle. Ordinary troopers need to feel useful, vehicles should contribute meaningfully to objectives, and powerful heroes should enhance a match without making everyone else feel irrelevant.

There is also an opportunity to serve different ways of playing. Competitive multiplayer, cooperative battles and offline options would each appeal to different audiences.

Those are wishes for a potential sequel. None has been confirmed for the reported project.

When could we see it?

EA has not provided a reveal date. Its memo says more will be shared when the time comes, leaving the timing open.

Until a formal announcement arrives, proposed trailers, release dates and feature lists should be treated cautiously.

For now, the confirmed development is the Respawn–DICE collaboration. Variety’s reporting provides the link to Battlefront 3, giving fans a substantial reason to watch what the studios do next.

What would you most want from another Battlefront: bigger battles, more cooperative content or a full single-player campaign?
